solidworks ellipse tutorial for beginners

Solidworks has a standard tool for drawing an ellipse. In fact this tool is more than just drawing standard ellipses. Navigate to ellipse button on the sketch toolbar and see the options:

Ellipse

You can draw standard ellipse by this option. Choose this button and:

  • First click: the center of ellipse
  • Second click: specify the bigger radius of the ellipse
  • Third click: specify the smaller radius of the ellipse

Partial ellipse:

  • First click: the center of ellipse
  • Second click: specify the bigger radius of the ellipse
  • Third click: specify the smaller radius of the ellipse
  • Forth click: specify your desired arc of ellipse

Parabola

First let’s see what parabola means!! Parabola is a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side. The path of a projectile under the influence of gravity ideally follows a curve of this shape. And how to draw it:

  • First click: the center of parabola
  • Second click: the vertex of parabola
  • Third click: starting point of the arc
  • Forth click: endpoint of the arc

Conic

As the name implies you can draw a cone by this tool fast and simple. From the mathematical point of view every cone is embedded in a triangle and when we draw a cone in solidworks we specify the three vertexes of this triangle by our first three clicks then with the last click we specify the vertex of cone:
